The camera is reasonably well designed but the Windows software that is supplied with it is really terrible. And I don't want to use Windows with it anyhow; I prefer Linux. Antonio Piccolboni has collected a lot of information on Digital Photography and Linux.
Sony doesn't provide documentation for the communication protocol used by the DSC-F1. However, it has been reverse engineered, and some fairly basic Linux tools have been written. The names of some of the tools are based on the Japanese name for the camera, "Cyber-shot".
